In his 70's, the superbly fit Rhee is a testament to healthy living. He performs 1,000 push-ups a day, maintains a strict diet, and engages in daily stretching and meditation -- all steps toward his goal of living to age 136! An innovator, Rhee developed the foam rubber safety gear used by thousands of martial artists today. The padded hand, foot and head guards are responsible for reducing sparring injuries in both martial arts schools and tournaments. Rhee is also concerned with
youth issues, and in 1979 announced that school-age students in his
classes would have to make the honor roll to pass their black belt examination.
Rhee is also actively involved in teaching Tae Kwon Do to members of
the United States Congress on Capitol Hill, where he hopes to spread
his message of longevity through the martial arts.
Some of his honors include 1975 Professional Karate Magazine Hall of Fame award; 1976 Martial Arts Man of the Century award at the American Bicentennial Sports Awards Banquet, where Henry Kissinger was awarded the Man of the Century, and Mohammed Ali as Boxer of the Century; and 1983 Black Belt Magazine Man of the Year award.
